ALL ABOUT NEWTON
All About Newton, MA
THE CITY OF NEWTON, is part of Middlesex County, Massachusetts in the Greater Boston area. Newton is a wonderful place to live in as it is an easy commute to Boston and offers quiet neighborhoods, great schools and beautiful historical homes. The city is a patchwork of thirteen villages, many boasting small downtown areas of their own. The 13 villages are: Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Centre, Newton Corner, Newton Highlands, Newton Lower Falls, Newton Upper Falls (both on the Charles River, and both former small industrial sites), Newtonville, Nonantum (also called "The Lake"), Oak Hill, Thompsonville, Waban and West Newton.
There are several historical sites of interest in the Newton area including Crystal Lake, the East Parish and West Parish Burying Grounds, and the Jackson Homestead. Built as a farmhouse in 1809, designed in the Federal style, the Jackson Homestead, is best known for its history as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, it is a museum where visitors can view many paintings, maps and historical artifacts.
Newton's industry in the late 1800s consisted of many small mills powered by Newton's waterfalls which included snuff, chocolate, glue and paper. The city was home to the Stanley brothers who developed the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, famous for who made the Stanley Steamer cars.
Newton has consistently been ranked as one of the best cities to live in in the country according to Money magazine in August 2012. It is one of the cities where the Boston Marathon is run, where runners tackle the first of four of the most challenging hills of the course. The last and most difficult hill of them all, infamously known as Heartbreak Hill challenges the most hardened athlete.
Newton is a beautiful suburban community offering rich history, many ponds and lakes, stately homes and a great public and private school system.
